about
I wrote the first verse of this song about Tamir Rice, and I’ve had it floating around in my head for years. This week I felt compelled to finish it. While the recent action among white people to take to the streets and scream against injustice is great, we have to face the facts that the horrific murders of people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery took place because we didn’t scream loud enough the last time or the time before that or the time before that or the time before that. We let each and everyone of these people, some of them CHILDREN, down.
This song is not perfect. My activism is not perfect. My understanding of the strife in these communities is not perfect. I wanted to do something in addition to donating, protesting, and advocating. I wanted to create. Bandcamp will not be taking any fees today, so 100% of the purchase price will go to me. I’ll be matching any money raised and then an outsider donor will be matching the grand total 3:1. I’ll be donating this money to the Chicago Community Bond Fund, an organization that is fighting to free incarcerated protesters as well as their longterm fights against ending police violence, money bond, and pre-trial incarceration, all of which target people of color.
